The cover
of their The
Happy Ending blu - ray is embarrassing — it's a fraction
of the
film's original movie poster blown up and set off center with the title written in thin blue lettering that's nearly indecipherable.
But it is the
film's reconciliation
of sympathy for Mary Spencer and fury towards American bourgeois sensibilities that make The
Happy Ending so immediate, so invigorating to watch.
Except that the final scene is
of her dancing to the eponymous track by Umberto Tozzi and, in itself, provided me with one
of my very favorite
film moments from 2013 — a perfectly uplifting, joyous
ending to a movie that manages to be optimistic without being pat, funny without being scornful and
happy without being slight.
Also, I was pleased to see the
film show a bit
of gumption by avoiding an entirely
happy, all's - well - that -
ends - well conclusion, but these upsides are not nearly enough to sweeten what is otherwise an inherently flawed
film.

Body count aside, «Hostiles» also features a
happy ending, albeit one whose politics are the most problematic
of any
film this year.
Therefore, when his attention turns on the heroes
of the piece, we instantly get scared and knowing the unpredictable nature
of this kind
of film, we doubt that there will be a
happy ending.
Happy End works best as a sort
of Haneke Greatest Hits package, recycling and updating multiple themes and concerns from his previous
films, in a way that seems deliberately designed to play to his fans.
While the «Dheepan» win surprised many here in Cannes — the
film devolves into revenge killings capped by a
happy ending — clearly Audiard's brand
of straightforward, well - tooled craftsmanship appealed to the Coens and their fellow jurors.
A
film that appeals to the pessimist in us, Irréversible may make you think
of Memento, but where Memento was about destiny, Irréversible is cynicially hopeful (if there is such a thing), illustrating the human impulse to look to the past for
happy endings — Bogey's bogus reassurance that «we'll always have Paris.»
The
happy ending most have accused the picture
of is actually much in line with the ambiguous open -
endings of Kurosawa's best horror
films.

films that have shaped his singular aesthetic.

happy ending, instead emphasizing the real world consequences
of issues like immigration, bureaucracy and death.

Happy Endings») and June Diane Raphael («Burning Love»), who also star in the
film as a ditzy, clueless duo reminiscent
of Dumb & Dumber and Romy & Michele's High School Reunion.
Far from the dark ambiguity
of High Art, Cholodenko's Laurel Canyon is actually about
happy endings and reunifications
of familial structures — it's not that I didn't enjoy the
film, it's that by the
end of it, I didn't respect it so much.
Some coming -
of - age
films may feature
happy endings, but Brian De Palma's
film depicts a bloody world
of shame and unwanted power
Copying the model
of many
of his previous vehicles with Seth Rogen — who has the supporting role
of a baffled script supervisor — Franco plays up the odd - couple bromance between Wiseau and Sestero, which gives him the like - hate - love trajectory an audience can find reassuring, and equips the
film with a ready - made
happy ending.
Happy Death Day came really close to having a very dark
ending, in spite
of the
film being fairly lighthearted for a horror movie.
Perhaps learning from the excesses
of Happy Feet, the creative minds behind this
film make every effort to keep the action and tone light and frothy, even when dealing with such serious issues as bee cruelty and the potential
end of human civilization without the important floral pollination process that bees provide.

And unlike
films typical to the genre
of animation (especially those with princesses), The Tale
of the Princess Kaguya doesn't tie everything up in a neat
happy bow for us at the
end.
A
film more sure
of itself would have dispatched this impediment to happiness with quick dispatch, but the makers
of Hitch - a
film that overstays its welcome by a good half - hour - seem to be the only filmmakers in Hollywood to not know how to put together a fast
happy ending, preferring instead to pile on the false climaxes and unnecessary plot wrinkles.
But by the
end of writer - director Ruidger Suchsland's
film, opening Friday for a week at the Gene Siskel
Film Center, we know all too well what the
happy death syndrome means.
