hard coal imports have surged — jumping 25 % in the first quarter of 2013 — as have its carbon emissions, which rose 1.5 % last year and are poised to rise again this year, alarming both the nation's environmental groups and the Merkel government.

imports 100 % of its consumed uranium, 98 % of its oil, 82 % of its natural gas, and 77 % of its
hard coal — and the bulk of oil and gas
imports, about 35 % each (more than the EU average), come from Russia.
Hard to believe that many of the countries that burn less than 2 %, the other 17.6 % are going to ramp up and
import a lot of
coal.
While Germany produces its own lignite (at the expense of complete German villages),
hard coal is
imported, and the ports of Rotterdam and Amsterdam are Germany's main
coal pusher.
Now, it's being reported that China will crackdown on the most polluting forms of
coal, meaning
imports from
coal producing nations like Australia, where solar is already squeezing
coal profits domestically, could be hit especially
hard.
