Abstract:
The harmful effects of bullying and harassment on children have long been of concern to parents, educators, and policy makers.
Steps to Respect also has a strong focus on building friendship skills (i.e. conversing, joining groups and maintaining friendships) as these have been shown to provide a buffer against
the harmful effects of bullying.
The program also addresses research evidence suggesting that the development of resilience, positive - self esteem, empathy, cooperation, friendship skills, social skills, self management skills, decision making, emotional management and conflict resolution can help to protect people from
the harmful effects of bullying, as well as helping them to build positive peer relationships.
Because of the documented
harmful effects of bullying — as well as other forms of social isolation — on school climate and student achievement, educators are taking this problem seriously.
The challenge facing schools now is to evaluate and reflect on their approaches to this issue (supported by regularly and systematically collected data), and to put in place effective evidence - based interventions that support and protect all pupils from
the harmful effects of bullying.
