Thankfully, one general rule of
awards bookings — the best value for your points is usually found on long -
haul bookings — allows you to reap dramatic savings using international
award redemption zones.
The
award chart for flights on Vietnam Airlines is distance - based and has some good
redemptions for short - and medium -
haul flights.
American Airlines AAdvantage miles are very hard to use economically thanks to the dearth of premium cabin SAAver
awards, United Miles are ok but 100,000 won't get you a roundtrip Business Class
award to any major long -
haul destination (if you're heading east or west) while 100,000 Alaska Miles will get you some nice roundtrip
redemptions on Cathay Pacific and even American (subject to
award availability).
Overall there are still some decent
redemptions to be had for short -
haul flights using Avios but, once again, British Airways has removed one of the biggest sweet spots in their
award chart and that doesn't endear them to me any more.
To start with, you can take advantage of some of the
redemptions noted above, like British Airways short -
haul awards, Flying Blue to Hawaii or the Caribbean, transatlantic flights on Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines first suites.
This chart is fantastic for short -
haul awards, as I noted in my post on the best Avios routes to fly and useful 4,500 Avios
redemptions around the world.
But it's not nearly enough to just allocate them some kind of uniform valuation, as some miles may be very valuable for a given type of
redemption (e.g. Avios for short -
haul economy
awards) and quite a poor value for other types of
redemptions (for Avios, ultra long -
haul in a premium cabin with high mileage cost and often high fuel surcharges).
Some of the best include the following: United Airlines, which opens up access to the huge Star Alliance network of carriers; British Airways, offering great value on short -
haul nonstop flights due to their distance - based
award chart; Korean Airlines, with amazing
award availability in their first class cabins; and Hyatt, which is widely recognized as offering some of the highest value point
redemption opportunities of any hotel chain.
On the
redemption side, the program offers very cheap short -
haul awards (as low as 4,500 miles in economy or 9,000 in business class), thus perfect for domestic flights within Japan (with no taxes!)
Avios is also a distance - based mileage
redemption program, so short -
haul awards require fewer miles than long -
haul awards, with
redemptions starting at just 4,500 Avios each way for flights under 600 miles, such as those between New York and Montreal.
It's just added a discounted
redemption option for short -
haul awards in the US, potentially making it even more valuable.
