In February 2016, New York state Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced executive actions that would ban public and private
health care insurers from covering conversion therapy.
An insurance company can operate across state lines (for example, many
large health care insurers sell plans in multiple states), but any policy they sell in a particular state currently has to adhere to that state's regulatory requirements.
I believe that some hospitals do this because they are tired of having
certain health care insurers deny the claim due to the fact that the injuries stem from an auto accident.
At a time when fatal heroin and opioid overdoses have risen to unprecedented rates — 10 suspected opiate overdose deaths a week in Erie County — many area families complain that
health care insurers are denying coverage for loved ones seeking medication and inpatient treatment for their addictions.
That is because
the health care insurer has a negotiated rate for each procedure.
One huge question is, will I have to reimburse
my health care insurer out of the settlement?
