That's partly why the city's
health department has been commended by public
health officials across the country, including
Tom Farley, former mayor Michael Bloomberg's
health commissioner, even as local politicians — most prominently Governor Andrew Cuomo — have publicly wondered whether the department could have done more or acted quicker.
On Monday — just five weeks later — City Council Speaker Christine Quinn stood with Dr.
Tom Farley, the city's
health commissioner, to proclaim that the city would move forward to restrict tobacco sales to anyone under 21.
Bassett has been in contact with both state
health commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker and
Tom Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and a former New York City
health commissioner.
