The first U.S. State
of the Birds report came out in 2009 and established the precedent
of using birds that are confined to specific
habitats as indicators
of the
health of those
habitats:
oceans, coasts, wetlands, arctic, forests, grasslands, and aridlands.
For the last decade, scientists have deployed increasingly capable underwater robots to map and monitor pockets
of the
ocean to track the
health of fisheries, and survey marine
habitats and species.
(A) describes the impacts
of climate change and
ocean acidification on the diversity and
health of the fish, wildlife and plant populations,
habitats, ecosystems, and associated ecological processes;
Now, history waits for the IWC to act decisively for whale conservation and the preservation and
health of ocean habits, by transcending the question
of whaling and extending its role in relation to the myriad troubles that beset the world's whales and their
habitats.»

For example, reductions in seasonal sea ice cover and higher surface temperatures may open up new
habitat in polar regions for some important fish species, such as cod, herring, and pollock.128 However, continued presence
of cold bottom - water temperatures on the Alaskan continental shelf could limit northward migration into the northern Bering Sea and Chukchi Sea off northwestern Alaska.129, 130 In addition, warming may cause reductions in the abundance
of some species, such as pollock, in their current ranges in the Bering Sea131and reduce the
health of juvenile sockeye salmon, potentially resulting in decreased overwinter survival.132 If
ocean warming continues, it is unlikely that current fishing pressure on pollock can be sustained.133 Higher temperatures are also likely to increase the frequency
of early Chinook salmon migrations, making management
of the fishery by multiple user groups more challenging.134
There is growing concern over the decline
of fisheries and the overall
health of the
ocean: scientists estimate that 90 %
of stocks are fished at or beyond sustainable limits,
habitats like coral reefs are threatened by
ocean acidification, and large areas
of ocean and coastlines are polluted.
