Never take what
you hear in critique groups or workshops as gospel.
I do still encourage the use of critique groups and beta readers as a first step in learning the ins and outs of the craft and business of writing, but keep in mind that most of what
you hear in a critique group needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

Self - published writers frequently
hear that they need to pass their books by beta readers or
critique groups first before sending the stories on to freelance editors (fewer corrections
in a book means a less expensive editing process).
They differ from a
critique group because they usually read a whole manuscript
in a few sittings rather than
hearing it over a period of months or years.
To me, it's no different than when I sit
in critique group and
hear what didn't work for my crit partners.
One submission has been made and I've read and
critiqued it, but I haven't
heard from anyone else
in the
group about an online conference to actually discuss the submission, or anything else moving forward.
