The problem is compounded among Christians by the fact that many who did not think they wanted to
hear the gospel find in it, when they do hear it, just what Christians have claimed.

Stringfellow quotes «if problems of misapprehension and misrepresentation are overcome and the
gospel can be
heard in its own integrity, the
gospel will be
found attractive by people, become popular, and, even, be a success of some sort» and then
finds this «curious and ironical (sic — it should be ironic)»???? It is not at all.
The convictionâ $» endemic among churchfolkâ $» persists that, if problems of misapprehension and misrepresentation are overcome and the
gospel can be
heard in its own integrity, the
gospel will be
found attractive by people, become popular, and, even, be a success of some sortâ $ ¦ This idea is both curious and ironical because it is bluntly contradicted in Scripture and in the experience of the continuing biblical witness in history from the event of Pentecost unto the present momentâ $ (William Stringfellow, quoted in A Keeper of the Word, p. 348).

The term is not, however, to be
found in the book itself; where we
hear of «secret words» or of the «mysteries» of Jesus (62) or of «the word of the Father» (79) Thus while the compilation of Thomas is in form not unlike the collection or collections of sayings of Jesus which may underlie the materials common to Matthew and Luke, there is no reason to suppose that the two are related, or that either was originally known as a
gospel.

Gospel, and having
heard, believe in Jesus for eternal life.
