With just days left before the Buffalo
School Board makes a final call
on plans for four low - performing
schools, hundreds of
community members turned out last night to have their voices
heard one last time before the board makes its decision.
Community Education Councils (CEC) The CECs work closely with the district superintendents, approve
school zoning lines, hold
hearings on the Capital Plan, and provide input
on instructional and policy issues.
The move came after a raucous joint
hearing at Wadleigh
on 114th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard, held by
Community Education Council 3 and the DOE, where politicians, parents, teachers, students and clergy vowed to take whatever steps were necessary to keep the
school open.
Several parents and
Community Education Council members said they
heard the DOE is eyeing the unscreened Richard Green High
School on the Upper East Side for 26 Broadway next fall.
Their responsibilities include: approving
school zoning lines, holding
hearings on the capital plan, evaluating
community superintendents, and providing input
on other important policy issues.
Proposed laws include allowing local governments to enact their own restrictions
on offenders, changing the legal definition of a
school to include pre-K and kindergarten, and holding risk assessment
hearings before an individual is allowed in a
community.
After meeting the whirlwind application deadline, working with partners in their target
communities to assess need and tailor their
school design, and making their case at a public
hearing, one local and two state charter
schools are
on their way:

school and elementary curricula; to strengthen our traditional neighborhood
schools through programs such as International Baccalaureate (IB) programmes and STEM; and create opportunities for more students to attend Selective Enrollment
schools, Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, and service leadership
schools These investments respond to those calls and build
on several years of progress in which CPS has provided over $ 33 million for CTE, IB, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math programs.

on parents to support the Milwaukee Parental Choice program coupled with the Opportunity
Schools and Partnership Program (aka the MPS Takeover) presented by State Senator Alberta Darling and Representative Dale Kooyenga, many people have never
heard of the
Community Schools initiative.
But if you have the opportunity to go to a PTA meeting, you would get to
hear all sorts of info from other parents and teachers — and maybe even the principal — about what is really going
on at the
school, the
school district, and the
community at large.
Up till then, most in the Cooper
community believed the
school to be
on solid ground, and were shocked to
hear otherwise.
