As you will know, heat passes from a hotter to a cooler body; and on the average, the surface layers of the oceans are cooler than the air above them (as anyone who has tried swimming in the North Sea on a sunny day in August will testify).

In this amateur's opinion, even if the air temperatures above the Arctic cool down below their norms, the amount of heat in the water below the ice is going to take it out.

Going back to the atmosphere, there must be methods devised in calculating the total heat in the system planet wide, that is the key, I see some efforts in finding Upper Air trends, that is better, but again flawed, the Upper atmosphere constantly changes tenperatures throughout a vertical profile hour by hour, taking an average at 700 mb, may miss a strong cooling just below, or warming above.

But the air above the clouds is dry, so it doesn't share in the latent heat or much radiative heat (not much H2O to absorb anything).
