But a feeding
black hole is surrounded
by a whirling, white - hot disk of glowing debris — material
heated to millions of degrees as it spirals down to oblivion.
Taken with the orbiting Chandra Observatory, it shows the hottest, most violent objects in the galaxy:
black holes gobbling down matter, gas
heated to millions of degrees
by dense, whirling neutron stars, and the high - energy radiation from stars that have exploded, sending out vast amounts of material that slam into surrounding gas, creating shock waves that
heat the gas tremendously, generating X-rays.
«This supermassive
black hole is regulating the growth of the galaxy
by blowing bubbles and
heating the gases around it.
About 12 billion years ago, the gas warmed from 8000 to 15,000 kelvin, probably due to
heating from quasars, objects powered
by giant
black holes, the team will report in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
Nevertheless, those modest - size
black holes left a big mark
by performing a form of stellar birth control: Radiation from the trickle of material falling into the
holes heated surrounding clouds of gas to about 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, so hot that the gas could no longer easily coalesce.
But it has been unclear whether that dust is
heated by the energy created as matter gets sucked into the
black hole, or
by radiation from newly born stars.
He is a specialist on active galactic nuclei, superbright galactic cores thought to be caused
by giant
black holes sucking in and
heating up quantities of gas and dust.
Perhaps what's different about them, McDonald says, is that the cooling of gas flowing into the center is slowed down
by the
heating effect of a
black hole spewing out material from the center of the cluster.
Detailed comparison of new observations and supercomputer simulations has only now allowed researchers to understand how this can happen: the gas is first
heated to temperatures of tens of millions of degrees
by the energy released
by the supermassive
black hole powering the quasar.
The disk
heats up due to the enormous gravitational pull
by the
black hole and emits intense radiation.
So these are not sort of small players, these are major parts of the energy budget of an accreting
black hole and
by extension, they have an important impact on their environment; and the jets associated with accreting
black holes and nuclei galaxies inflate giant lobes of plasma outside the galaxy and these
heat the surrounding gas, they affect the fuel supply, they stimulate star formation, they in fact stimulate galaxy formation.
As matter is sent whirling into a
black hole, tugged ever harder
by the
hole's irresistible gravity, the material
heats up, and along its wild ride it radiates that
heat away as light, until it disappears past the
black hole's «event horizon» — the border beyond which nothing, not even light, can escape the
hole's violent gravitational pull.
The scientists incorporated a variety of physical processes in the calculations, including three that are considered particularly important for the development of the visible universe: first, the condensation of matter into stars, second, their further evolution when the surrounding matter is
heated by stellar winds and supernova explosions and enriched with chemical elements, and third, the feedback of supermassive
black holes that eject massive amounts of energy into the universe.
Researchers are keen to understand the feeding habits of
black holes because such binges, called accretion events, have an enormous effect on their surroundings, shutting off galaxy growth
by heating and expelling the gas needed to form new stars.
To plunge over the event horizon, material captured
by a
black hole must lose
heat and momentum.
It is surrounded
by a disk of material that is slowly funneling into the
black hole,
heated by the action of a jet that is moving at very high speed out from the
black hole.
The
heat generated
by the
black hole then
heats up the gas again and pushes it outward to restart the whole process.
The observation data of NGC 1097 strongly indicates possible impact of shock wave
heating by the jet which is ejected from the
black hole.
The gas in the disk is
heated by the friction it experiences rubbing against other gas in the disk and also
by the release of gravitational potential energy as it falls inward onto the
black hole.
As a swirling disk of gas gradually falls into the central
black hole, it
heats up and some of the gas is blown off the disk
by intense radiation in a wind at speeds up to a tenth of light speed (more illustrations).
According to the researchers, this pattern is the result of stellar debris colliding with itself (which produces bursts of optical and UV light), and
heating up just before being swallowed
by the
black hole (which gives off X-ray flares).
