After much
heated debate and delay, the Village of Oxford Board of Trustees voted 4 - 1 last night in favor of a change in the municipal zoning ordinance that clarifies a prohibition against
gas exploration, extraction, and disposal, establishing the first
fracking moratorium in Chenango County.
They have faulted Gov. Cuomo for continuing to promote the burning of
fracked gas across the state, including his proposal to add two new
gas turbines in Arbor Hill to
heat the Empire State Plaza.
The agency's findings could be a turning point in the
heated national debate about whether contamination from
fracking is happening, and are likely to shape how the country regulates and develops natural
gas resources in the Marcellus Shale and across the Eastern Appalachian states.
Fracking is part of a nationwide boom in the production of natural
gas, which is a ready replacement for home
heating oil and could lessen dependence on foreign fossil fuels if vast underground shales could be hydraulically fractured.

heat our homes.

heat - trapping
gas leaks during natural
gas production, in a shift with major implications for a debate that has divided environmentalists: Does the recent boom in
fracking help or hurt the fight against climate change?»
But some of the
fracking in these basins is for natural
gas, which serves as an alternative to oil in some capacity (
heating), yet it competes with different market forces and regulatory issues.
