the pistons are made of aluminium and the cylinders have a special tough glassy coating so they screatch very easily and when the engine is too hot the aluminium deforms and heats in a vicious circle until they lock up or it overheats and smokes.
Since methane was a greenhouse gas, which blocked heat radiation even more effectively than CO2, its release would cause more warming still in a vicious feedback circle.
