In response to the open - ended question about gambling - related coping strategies, the responses were coded under four major themes reflecting strategies the participants used to cope with family member's
problem gambling: (1) financial control including taking over the finances; (2) supportive engagement including talking, rationalising, giving advice; (3)
help - seeking including support for the
gambler to attend counselling; and (4) avoidance and denial such as keeping away from the
gambler and doing their own thing.
The first aim of the current article was to examine the occurrence and patterns of family violence in a group of
help - seeking family members of
problem gamblers.
Accordingly, the current study aims to: (1) establish the prevalence and patterns of family violence victimisation and perpetration in a sample of
help - seeking family members of
problem gamblers; and (2) explore gambling - related family impacts and coping strategies in the presence or absence of family violence.
