help visit our shelter.

When one neighbor's wife was terminally ill, as neighbors discovered her needs, they
helped with food, running errands,
visits and flowers.When we
visit neighborhood garage sales as the sales are winding down (usually just before lunchtime), we look for blankets, coats, sweaters and similar items that we deliver to a local homeless
shelter.
Start locally -
helping out an elderly neighbor with some chores, volunteering at a rescue

helping out the neighborhood school, being involved in a kids program at the local park,
helping out at a local hospital,
visiting a juvenile detention center on a regular basis.

shelter first or watch videos about life on the street and are then asked to brainstorm for ways to
help these people, they will be a lot more active (and ultimately, more successful) in their efforts.
Consider
visiting shelters and providing free financial planning advice or other novel ways to
help those who need it the most.
Decisions on size, coat type, potential health problems, ease of training, need for exercise, behavior, temperament, and attitude made before you see that litter of pups or
visit a pet store or

help make a good decision on the animal that will share your home.

visiting the
shelter facility will see signs posted about the outreach program, and there are also Captain Care cards on hand for staff to pass out to families who express a need for
help.

In fact, doing a food or supply collection before your
visit is a great way to generate excitement and interest in your group as well as
help the
shelter animals.
Studies show that it may
help with general anxiety, as well as stress caused by vet
visits, travel, fireworks and other loud noises, separation anxiety, and can even
help calm dogs in
shelters.
Although occasionally one of our volunteers discovers a cat while
visiting a
shelter, the usual procedure is for
shelters to approach us, asking us to
help with cats we are in a better position to serve.

Peggy Kirkpatrick said it was an article in The Lake Sentinel in 1992 that got her interested in volunteering at the Humane Society of Lake County.She read that the
shelter had taken in a group of neglected Pomeranians, and Kirkpatrick stopped at the
shelter to see them.Before long, she became a regular
shelter volunteer, cleaning cages and
helping to take animals on monthly
visits to two different nursing homes.
If fostering isn't for you, we also need
help with home checks, transport,
shelter checks, and
visits to dogs who are being surrendered.
