The other major contributor to this 4 month fiasco, I find, is that up until this point, parents have either been putting their baby to sleep
with a pacifier, or by rocking them, or by
breastfeeding them, or some similar
technique where baby is
helped along on the road to falling asleep.
Keep a close eye on how many wet nappies your baby has — and, if you're concerned your baby isn't getting enough breastmilk, you should see a lactation consultant for more
help with latch and
breastfeeding techniques.
The doula
helps with soothing
techniques, offers
breastfeeding or bottle feeding support, and explains normal newborn behavior.
The facilitators talked about the difficulties many women experience
with engorgement, painful nipples from poor attachment
technique and stressed the importance of initial and ongoing
help if difficulties arose
with breastfeeding.
At the initial contact, peer counselors discussed pumping
techniques in 100 % of documented cases;
helped the mother pump in 72.1 % of cases; accompanied the mother to the NICU in 72.1 % of cases; and
helped the mother to
breastfeed, kangaroo care, or both in 30.2 % of cases (kangaroo care is skin - to - skin holding that has been practiced effectively
with premature infants in many NICUs and shown to improve infants» outcomes23 - 26).
We'll also look at how using hands — the mother's hands, and sometimes the professional's — can aid in the prevention and treatment of a variety of
breastfeeding issues, including both rapid and slow milk production and plugged ducts, as well as
help with feeding preemies, twins, etc., and describe several very different manual
techniques for these different situations.
The relaxation
technique is suitable for first - time mothers during early
breastfeeding as it
helps them cope
with postnatal uneasiness especially when feeling stressed by the child raising task at hand after birth.
Postpartum doulas are also trained to
help with breastfeeding, mother - baby bonding, relationships
with other family members, sleep training, swaddling
techniques, and other common postpartum questions.
Listening to music while pumping or
breastfeeding, relaxation
techniques like deep breathing or massages, and having pleasurable food or drink have all been shown to
help a little bit
with milk supply, most likely because they all reduce stress.
