The
analysis focuses on a period beginning after World War 2 when a decades - long climb in global
temperatures stopped, with the northern
hemisphere, particularly, cooling somewhat.
The original hockey - stick
analysis plotted reconstructed Northern
Hemisphere mean
temperature variations since 1400 and found that since 1900,
temperatures have increased to give the graph its distinctive shape (Nature 1998, 392, 779 - 787).
Cross correlation with SST in the northern
hemisphere reveals a lag of about 5 years after
temperature, spectrum
analysis shows an oscillation of about 65 years as SST in the polar ocean and the geomagnetic index.

A recent
analysis of a number of different proxy
temperature records suggests that Northern
Hemisphere decadal - scale averages over land may have been as much as approximately 0.2 — 0.4 °C above the 1850 — 2006 mean from roughly 950 — 1150 AD (32).
