So I took a piece of wood molding that I had and we nailed that as a header on top, it was such a wide piece of trim that it covered up the top gap — then I used some burlap to
hide each side gap (mounted it by stapling it to the header trim).

This is the route to the
hidden area, so turn around and go up this cliff
side (which in turn is directly opposite the cliff you were on previously) and continue until you see a
gap on the wall in the right
side.
The shelf is sitting on pieces of wood that are attached to the
sides of the cabinets, and there is a face frame on the shelf that hangs down and
hides that
gap between the microwave the shelf.
I figured out that I need to put some molding on the front of them to help
hide gaps on either
side of the stairs, so I found this flat piece that fit on there perfectly to make the stair treads look better AND
hide the
gaps on the
sides.
