Major consequences of such changes over regional scales will probably include (1) reductions in primary production combined with (2) shifts from diatom - dominated (low SA: V ratio) phytoplankton assemblages with
high POC - export efficiencies to picoplankton communities (high SA: V ratio) characterized by low export efficiencies (Smith et al., 2008; Morán et al., 2010; Morán et al., 2015).
If the cells were larger in the future ocean treatment, this should result in
higher POC content and lower PIC: POC ratio.

By measuring
POC in the different sinking fractions for each water sample, the team determined that median slow - sinking
POC concentrations were 75 times
higher than median fast - sinking

At the 703 generation point,
POC content (figure 2b) was significantly
higher (t - test t22 = 2.0, p = 0.002) by 14 % in the future ocean condition.
POC content (figure 2b) did not dramatically differ between present and future ocean conditions at 215 and 414 generations (t - test t20 = 2.7, p = 0.02 at 215 generations, t - test with Welch correction, t16 = 1.5, p = 0.15 at 414 generations), though values were between 10 and 28 %
higher in the future ocean condition (table 4).
If this is taken into account, it can be concluded that
POC export fluxes increase while the passing waters are advected around and over the seamount, with the
highest export fluxes occurring on the downstream side of the seamount.
