Sagan had proposed very
high Venusian surface temperatures, and ascribed them to an ultra-strong greenhouse effect on the basis of careful calculations using all that was then known.
The huge pressure at the surface is where we observe
the high Venusian temperature.

Toward the end of that year, though, the Pioneer Venus probe entered
Venusian orbit — and immediately recorded suspiciously
high levels of sulfur dioxide above the clouds.
Taylor says that the
high levels of sulphur dioxide in the
venusian upper atmosphere are also almost certainly due to recent volcanic eruptions.
While the large atmospheric pressure at the surface and the
high altitude of the
Venusian cloud layer appears to exclude the possibility of cloud - to - ground lightning (Gurnett et al. 2001; Aplin 2006), several authors have suggested that lightning discharges above, between or within clouds may occur (Borucki 1982; Russell & Scarf 1990; Gurnett et al. 2001).
So, the scientific thread of albedo prediction from optical depth, Van de Hulst, Sagan and Pollack [

high CO2 - AGW hypothesis is taken away, CO2 probably loses AGW monopoly via «polluted cloud heating».
This condition exists in spite of the fact that the
high reflectivity of the
Venusian clouds causes the planet to absorb less solar radiation than Earth.
