The Rainforest Action Network has announced that Gucci Group — including high fashion houses — Yves Saint Laurent, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney and Balenciaga — has pledged to reduce the amount of paper it uses, eliminate fiber from
high conservation value forests, and purchase only recycled products — or those certified by the Forest Stewardship Council — by December 2010.
These include using natural pests and composting in place of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers whenever possible, implementing no burn policies, sparing
high conservation value forests from development, taking measures to reduce air pollution, and creating catchment ponds to prevent palm oil mill effluent from entering waterways where it would damage aquatic habitats.
RSPO is still dogged by lack of oversight, lack punishment for cheaters, fundamental conflicts (for example, abiding by RSPO rules on sparing of
high conservation value forest technically put Indonesian growers in violation of Indonesian law which requires concession holders to develop all land for plantations) and the perception, among critics, that its primary function is to legitimize continued expansion.

forests can classified as
High Conservation Value (HCV) areas.
Concerns over the certification standard have been stoked by pictures which activists claim show RSPO members continuing to clear
high value conservation forest areas (HCV) in violation of certification protocol.
Both Asia Pulp & Paper, a paper products giant widely condemned by environmentalists for its destructive
forest practices, and Wilmar, a Singapore - based agribusiness giant that accounts for 45 percent of global palm oil production, committed to progressive
forest policies that exclude conversion of
forests with more than 35 tons of above ground biomass, peatlands, and habitats with
high conservation value.
