sugar high that causes you to crash a couple of hours later.
HISD's
breakfasts are much too
high in
sugar, to be sure, but they are not outliers.
While convenience foods make
breakfast quick and easy, they are often
high in
sugar and simple carbohydrates while lacking in nutrition.
They had processed
high -
sugar breakfast cereals (heaven forbid they should actually cook some oatmeal), gallons of fresh milk (because powdered is «icky» and they won't eat it), cheese (that was a luxury we couldn't afford), frozen convenience foods, juice (which is much less healthy than fruit and expensive relative to nutrients), and soda, candy, donuts, cookies, cracker, ice cream and other treats we couldn't possibly afford.
Typical
breakfast foods are
high in refined carbohydrates and
sugar, which can cause energy crashes and lead to increased cravings for
sugar.
For example, a switch from
high sugar cereal to low
sugar cereal at
breakfast district wide is a disaster if the result is that
breakfast participation drops by 50 %.
As regular TLT readers know, I recently resigned from the Houston ISD (HISD) Nutrition Services Parent Advisory Committee (PAC), in part because I was frustrated by the district's backsliding on promises to reduce the
