than some lower - status lines of work (such as child care workers, secretaries, and paralegals).
Many elite colleges and universities no longer offer undergraduate teacher preparation programs, and many teacher preparation programs are housed within less selective colleges.5 Nonetheless, the academic profiles of teaching candidates in regional comprehensive universities are
high relative to
other programs offered in those schools.6 Furthermore, many teacher preparation programs do not have admission criteria beyond those of their home institution, and only have access to a pool of candidates already admitted to the overarching college or university.7 For these reasons among
others, the average SAT scores of students going into education have historically been lower
than those of their peers entering
other professions, although there is some evidence that this is shifting.8

professions.7 This demonstrates a misalignment between
high - achieving undergraduate students and students in teacher preparation programs and a disconnect between their respective views of the rigor of teacher training.
In fact, the importance of experience may be clearer in the teaching
profession than any
other, as shown in a recent re-analysis of the STAR Tennessee experiment, showing that Kindergarten students had
higher achievement and earnings as adults, depending on how long their teachers had been in the
profession, with gains for every year up to twenty.
With an average annual salary of slightly more
than $ 36,000 for new teachers and slightly more
than $ 58,000 overall, most teachers are compensated less
than they were 30 years ago, when adjusting for inflation.69 In addition, teachers earn 60 percent of what similarly educated professionals earn, which is much lower
than in
other Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development member countries.70 This has made it harder for schools to attract young people to the teaching
profession and for
high - need schools to attract excellent teachers.
After becoming a teacher in South Carolina, it may take longer to see

than it may in
other professions, but salaries for those with teaching certification in South Carolina who are many years into their professional experience can be fairly

Beyond law schools, mental health issues in the legal
profession is something that is increasingly addressed: «But research suggests that [lawyers] are at much
higher risk of depression, anxiety and substance abuse issues
than people in the broader population — and may even be more susceptible
than those in
other high - stress
professions, such as medicine.»
Lawyers suffer from
higher rates of alcoholism, divorce, depression, and suicide
than any
other profession.

other thing to say here is that we do of course have a split
profession over here, and it may be that the personal nature of blogging is more attractive to barristers
than solicitors — I think it's already true that a
