highlighting Duchamp's critical comments about art juries; Corey Arcangel's video Apple Garage Band Auto Tune Demonstration, 2007, which tweaks the concept
of aesthetics in the digital age; Bernd and Hilla Becher's photographs, Four Water Towers, 1980, that reveal the potential for aesthetic choices within the same typological structures; and works by Elad Lassry and Steven Baldi, who explore the aesthetic history

He works from photographs and drawings, creating collage - like compositions, and then experiments with different ways
of drawing out the aspects that
interest him — whether
highlighting the surface detail or distant
object, or by painting a version
of the image as a blocked - out negative
of flat colour.
Referencing the Japanese art
of Kintsugi — repairing broken pottery with lacquer mixed with powdered gold or silver to
highlight the breakage — Smith is
interested in how breakage and repair becomes part
of the
object's history and dignity, and is viewed as beautiful.
