With its variety of
puzzle types, a fairy - tale story for some minor plot distraction, and a helpful
hint system
in place, this is a fairly easy
game to recommend to any pure
puzzle fan.
Compared to a time when
gamers were forced to rely on dial - up
hint lines,
game store guides, and plain old tenacity to get them through the stickiest of
puzzles, it's a far cry from today's teeming online communities where every
in -
game challenge is a mere forum post or walk - through video away from being solved.
Throughout the
game, you uncover the soul - stirring plot gradually by solving
puzzles, with the aid of
hints in your surroundings.
Moreover, while there's nothing overly challenging
in the
game, TOMK does have a new
hint system to prevent you from getting frustrated with a
puzzle you simply can't solve.
There is no online functionality which is certainly forgivable given an indie developer's budget for a debut
game, although it would have been nice to see the inclusion of local and online leaderboards which could have focused on the fastest times
in which each jigsaw
puzzle were completed by every player
in single player or co-operatively throughout each
puzzle size and group of options such as
hints,
puzzle piece rotation and background image.
The
game doesn't do much to help you
in regards to solving these
puzzles — there is no
hint system — but there are quite a few computer terminals and notes laying around that are beneficial for you to investigate.
Falling
in with the minimalist design of the
game however, there is a lack of obvious
hints that clue you
in to what you should be doing to complete each
puzzle.
It's odd because
in other
puzzles the
game gives you a
hint when it realizes you're stuck, but for these particular
puzzles it didn't do that at all.
You periodically find notes & audio logs (ala every old - school horror
game ever) that fill you
in on the story and at the end of each zone, you're given a
puzzle (so far, they've just been lame «Put these things
in the right order»
puzzles) which you gain bonus money if you manage to complete it with no help (if you get stuck, you can ask for
hints which lowers the reward).
If you struggle
in solving any of the
puzzles in the
game, don't forget that you can always use the
Hint Coins that you find throughout the
game.
Logic Dots is a free
game to play, but offers
in - app purchases
in return for
hints which may be used to solve
puzzles and unlock new level packs.
If the
game was to be made now, the player character would be an inhuman, grunting lump of muscle (or
in the case of a female, the character would be an athletic nymphomaniac with disproportionate breasts, occasionally
hinting at having girl power so to deflect any potential criticism of sexism), the
puzzles would simply be deleted, exploration would amount to just following the arrow to the next waypoint, and dialog would be halved.
This
game is a unique as far as
puzzles go, a lot of I haven't come across before, and I enjoyed them very much... some took me quite a while to solve The
game opened
in widescreen... a definite plus, hate having to change things There are 3 modes of play: Easy - Expert - Pro... Expert players will love this
game as there is no hand holding at all... no sparkles, no
hints and no skips I played the Easy mode where
hints charged
in about 15 seconds and not much longer for skips I quite like the HOS as well... lists, silhouettes and find one thing to open or find another object but done differently than the norm There are no voice overs, which I didn't mind for a change, not an overly lot of dialogue to read either Graphics were good without being spectacular.
They're triggered a few ways, and the
game always has something subtly unusual placed
in the world to
hint that the
puzzle is nearby.
The
puzzles on offer are a substantially harder than you'll generally find
in a normal Layton
game, but you can use
hint coins and there's also assistance
in the form of the TRANSLAYTON — a chat system with automatic translation so you can communicate with others around the world.
, and
in the Oracles
games when you hit owl statues with Mystery Seeds you would get helpful
hints about
puzzles and stuff.
The
game will play out like many others that consider themselves psychological action thrillers — the player will have to interact with NPC's and various other objects
in order to the advance the story and gain
hints about solving the complex
puzzles.
What we didn't do, however, is create an
in -
game hint system that will help new players solve those more obscure
puzzles without having to consult an online
hint doc.
