In this study reporting a cross-section of individuals attending a clinic for imaging scans, we can see that there is quite large variability between individuals in terms of
hip muscle volumes, especially when it comes to the larger muscles, such as the gluteus maximus.

This injury occurs from poor
hip and core
muscle strength, poor mechanics and increase
volume of running too quickly.
Note that
muscle is a lot heavier than the same
volume of fat, meaning that you can put on a few pounds of
muscle with few noticeable changes to your body, since those muscular changes can (and often do) happen in the deep
muscle tissue such as the
hip floor or the
muscles that are in charge of spinal integrity.
