MANHATTAN — A day after the State University of New York approved new regulations to make it easier for
charter schools to
hire teachers without master's degrees — and even without bachelor's degrees — the city and state's teachers» unions filed a lawsuit to stop the
standards from being implemented.

Charter schools ARE public schools: By law, they must adhere to all public education laws,

standards as do traditional school districts, take the same standardized, state - wide assessments and are free of tuition and open to all applicants.
In exchange for certain freedoms, such as the ability to develop their own curriculum, make their own
hiring decisions, and establish their own
standards for student behavior,
charter schools must continuously demonstrate that they have earned the right to continue the great privilege of educating the children of South Carolina.
