The photographs depict the artist Cy Twombly (1928 — 2011) descending the steps of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli, a thirteenth - century church on Rome's Campidoglio, or Capitoline Hill, one of the most historic sites in the city (fig. 2).1 The images in Cy + Roman Steps (I — V) were most likely taken within the first few days of Rauschenberg and Twombly's arrival in Rome in early September 1952.
