Taking as a starting point Alice Neel's prophetic 1936 painting, Nazis Murder Jews, which depicts a Communist party torchlight parade through the streets of New York City, the exhibition presents
historical works in addition to new and recent works by artists who address issues including migration, censorship, struggles for equality and democracy.
Contemporary appropriation artists add a new dimension to the use of adopted images, as seen in the work of such artists as Mike Bidlo, David Bierk, George Deem, Audrey Flack, Kathleen Gilje, Paul Giovanopoulos, Deborah Kass, Jiri Kolar, Sherrie Levine, Carlo Mariani, Yasumasa Morimura, Vik Muniz, Richard Pettibone, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and others, providing an instructive and stimulating counterpoint to the issues raised by
the historical works in the show.
Suitable exhibitions include: those focusing on the work of living artists or art made after 1950; group shows featuring contemporary and historical works; presentations of
historical works in galleries which primarily show the work of contemporary artists.
Where are the additional four hundred
historical works in the exhibition coming from?
With major thematic exhibitions, the gallery frequently re-examines the work of influential post-war artists, and places contemporary art and
historical works in dialogue.
The installation also includes several images of Annunciation paintings, showing Eija - Liisa's direct engagement of significant art
historical works in a contemporary fashion.
