Capitalism and its promise of a better life is explored through paintings on luxury fabrics whose patterns acquire a neo-classical painterly quality; Orientialism and a subtle critique of European values are explored in the films of his roadtrip to Pakistan and Afghanistan with shocking neutrality; and conceptual art is mocked in Potato House (1967) and paintings of absurd mathematical equations, while the series of self - portraits — Polke as astronaut, Polke as drug — confront the contemporary individual in the mire of history.

Expressive traditions live on in this new painting, as do cool strategies, yet the approach of these contemporary painters is always calculated and cognizant of the medium's history.

My current painting practice centres on the representation of objects and is inspired by the history of still life painting — in particular, 17th century Dutch vanitas paintings, a genre which employed objects as a kind of commentary on contemporary moral and social concerns, as well as exploiting their aesthetic potential.

Unlike earlier shows, where Waters focused on narrative collaged film stills and a fascination with cinematic history, he began to move towards the sculptural realm and the themes of celebrity and contemporary life, with increasing success.

From Abromović to Wodiczko, the On Art and Artists collection offers those interested in art history, contemporary practices and education a rare and rewarding study guide, offering insight into the lives, practices and methodologies of some of the most vital practitioners of our time.

Mickalene Thomas (b. 1971, Camden, NJ; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY) makes paintings, collages, photography, video, and installations that draw on art history and popular culture to create a contemporary vision of female sexuality, beauty, and power.

A selection of major paintings by Antoni Tàpies (1923 — 2012) from the last four decades of his life, this exhibition is a comprehensive meditation on the postwar master, illuminating the many connections between his influential body of work and contemporary art history.
