By law, shelters must
hold stray dogs for 72 hours.
ACO's are only required to
hold stray dogs for 7 days past the time they advertise the pet.

LBR has a great working relationship with over 90 North and Central Texas shelters and as long as we know where the person is taking the
stray boxer, we stand a very good chance of being able to assist that
dog once it's
stray hold is up.

stray hold that we try to reunite with their owners,

stray holding period from 72 hours to 4 - 6 days failed to correspond with a significantly higher rate of return to owner for cats or
dogs, yet resulted in substantially greater demands for housing and care [5].

When evaluating
stray holding periods, check the median time to owner reclaim — at many shelters, the vast majority of
dogs that are ever reclaimed, are reclaimed on the first or second day in the shelter.

have the space or the time, s0 if a
dog comes in terrified or growling, they euthanize it when the
stray hold is up.
What about the
dogs in
stray holding?
Unfortunately, there are still
stray holding facilities that do not proactively search for an owner and the
dog may be at risk of being put down at the end of the
stray hold period.
Our organizations advise people that have found a
dog to contact their official local
stray holding facility (whether it be the shelter, a vet clinic or kennel, the town office or police department).
Some
stray -
holding facilities will allow the finder to «foster» the
dog until an owner is found; but many want the
dog brought to their facility.
However, the only way you can truly indemnify yourself as a rescue, is to only pull
dogs from shelters after they have completed their legal
stray hold time.
In Massachusetts,
stray dogs are required to be
held from 7 - 10 days, depending on the city, for a «
stray holding period.»
Healthy
dogs will be made available to the public for adoption after serving a state - mandated
stray hold.
Based on this information it seems abundantly clear that
dogs should be
held at least three days, but likely not more than 5 days, because as time passes, the likelihood of a
dog's owner being found diminish rapidly and
dogs end up assuming space in a shelter with very little opportunity for any potential outcome until the
stray hold is up.
When we left off on our story of Gabriel and Serafina, we were waiting to take possession of the
dogs from the vet where they were being
held on
stray hold and bring Serafina to Oradell for evaluation of her injuries.
The law requires a
stray dog be advertised and
held for a seven day period.
Fresno Humane Animal Services is the designated
holding facility for
stray dogs and sick / injured
stray cats from the unincorporated Fresno County area.

An additional 14 cats and 12
dogs that were owner surrendered or had expired
stray holds were transported by our volunteers into Houston on Sept. 7.
In order to place more homeless pets into loving homes, we are now accepting pre-adoption applications for the
dogs in our
stray -
holding kennel.
Unlicensed,
stray dogs and cats are required to be
held for five days.
The legislation also standardizes
holding times for
stray dogs, prohibits the use of gas chambers for euthanizing
dogs and cats, and creates a spay / neuter program, funded by a voluntary tax check off, that is designed to reduce the number of homeless animals in Massachusetts.
Strays and
dogs placed in our care by Animal Control are not tested until the required
hold time has lapsed and the
dog has not been reclaimed by the owner.
For months, staff has been finding room for
dogs in cages in the
stray - and surgery -
holding areas.
Some jurisdictions, notably Shanghai and Singapore15 have built pounds to
hold strays, while in other locales, private citizens have formed humane societies and loose - knit groups of volunteers to care for rescued
dogs.
We ONLY take in
dogs who are legally surrendered to us by their owners, or who we have pulled from a shelter after they have completed a
stray -
hold period and are made available to rescue groups.
CCHS meets State and County mandated
holding periods for
stray dogs and cats.
If you would like us to
hold the
dog for the
stray period, you can either bring the
dog to us during our open hours, or call the office to arrange for a Canine Control Officer to come to you and pick up the
dog.
And Wiley and I have talked about removing the 72 - hour «
stray hold» for
dogs and puppies.
The size of the cages in the
stray holding section is reduced, thereby permitting fewer
dogs to be put in the same cage.
Once the
dog's
stray hold was up, and no one claimed her, this desperate
dog was in need of a miracle.
There are organizations in Massachusetts and neighboring states that will take
dogs from municipal facilities when their
stray hold is up; see MAC's AniMatch program, for example, AniMatch, and breed rescues (see list at http://www.crdtc.org/ne-rescu.html).
(d) When
stray dogs and cats are accepted by an animal shelter and no owner can be identified, the shelter shall
hold the animal for the period specified in local ordinance prior to adoption, transfer, or euthanasia.
Shelter / rescues should take this opportunity to connect with their local animal control department to help build relationships to transfer
stray dogs at the end of the
holding period to facilitate adoption.
The Massachusetts Animal Coalition urges all Massachusetts shelters and rescues to collaborate with their local animal control departments to ensure that all unclaimed adoptable
dogs have access to adoption at the end of their
stray hold period.
The shelter had problems caring for
dogs held long - term in cruelty or bite cases; they were housed in the investigation /
stray kennels, and at the time, they received little stimulation.
Some states» shelters also ONLY have 2 - 4 days
HOLD for
strays, they are so full, they barely have enough time for legit ppl looking for their lost
dog to find them before they are euthanized!!!
