At field sites in Iowa, Kansas and Wisconsin, they took soil samples using tools called corers — foot - long hollow tubes designed to slice through the soil.
This design was later replaced with by a hollowtube stuffed with electronics to better capture the experience of real juvenile salmon swimming through dams.
