One lesson I learned over the years is that
dogs and cats with special needs are among the hardest to adopt, so when I heard
about the Pose A Pet ™ app to get pets into new
homes quicker, I wanted to
know more.
Often shelters choose to work with rescue groups who
know spit
about behavior and training because those people can get the
dogs into fosters and
homes, rather than actual trainers whose focus is resolution of problem behaviors through training so the
dog can STAY in the new
home, and stay safely for all concerned, the
dogs and the owners.
Having spent thousands of hours in shelters as a volunteer, I see these hapless
dogs often bounce from
home to
home, because shelters are not in the business or practice of rehabilitating problem
dogs (which shelters also don't utilize the assistance of their skilled local trainers quite enough, in part because they think they
know as much
about behavior as we trainers do, or think they
know enough).

know, too, that the Canadian pet industry is a $ 6 - billion - plus economic beast, and that Canada is
home to more cats than
dogs, the felines numbering

Beyond the typical thoughts that the good breeders should CERT for hips, eyes and breed specific diseases, etc., and
know quite a bit
about genetics, my criticisms of breeders, even the so - called good ones, are more social in nature in regard to how they affect the social lives of the
dogs they have bred, their owner selection process, and the possibility of the
dog's success in staying in a
home for life.

dog to obey you in your
home and in your life.

know has a
dog that is giving birth to a litter of puppies that are a mix of Jack Russells and Basset Hounds, and before we end up bringing one of them
home, I want to find out as much as I can
about this particular breed, especially
about common medical issues and average life span.

home or simply seem as though they have forgotten everything they

homes that their puppies are destinied for, to the point of not performing a breeding if they don't feel good
homes will be available for the pups * never has more
dogs of their own than they are properly able to care for * is willing and able to educate and build a relationship with their puppy buyers * is honest * uses spay / neuter contracts and / or limited registration to prevent the casual breeding of their puppies * is ALWAYS willing to take back a
dog of their breeding if a puppy buyer can not keep it for any reason.
However, it's always good to
know as much as you can
about your foster
dog before he comes into your
home.
Come to us with an open hear and be honest
about your lifestyle (very active,
no so active, very busy at work, very energetic kids, a couch potato
dog at
home etc) and let us help you direct you toward the
dogs whose personality fit your lifestyle better.
Backyard breeders may not
know about proper health certifications before breeding or go to that expense before breeding their
dogs, nor are they selective of good genetics, nor do they choose to learn the breed standard, nor do they show or performance trial their breeding
dogs, nor are they selective
about quality
homes, and are not supportive should the buyer be unable to train or keep the
dog.
