Although paraprofessionals can have a range of formal preparation for their roles, we chose to examine paraprofessional visitors who share many of the social characteristics of the families they serve, as many believe that shared social characteristics increase visitors» ability to empathize with their clients who, in turn, are more likely to trust those who are similar to them.20, 21 This segment of the paraprofessional population is important to test as the
use of community health workers with limited educational backgrounds is a common service delivery strategy in many
home visiting programs, 22,23 and it is estimated that 60 % of
home visiting programs for children do not require visitors to have bachelors» degrees.24
Effects were more consistent on physical abuse, however, with mothers in the treatment group reporting fewer instances of very serious physical abuse at one year and fewer instances of serious abuse at two years.54 In Alaska, the HFA
program was associated with less psychological aggression, but it had no effects for neglect or severe abusive behaviors.55 Similarly, in the San Diego evaluation of HFA,
home -
visited mothers reported less
use of psychological aggression at twenty - four and thirty - six months.56 Early Start also reported small effects in terms of lowering rates of severe physical abuse.57

program.
Some
programs use professional nurses or masters - prepared personnel as their
home visitors; others
use trained paraprofessionals who are often members of the target community and culturally linked with the families they

Many less costly and less structured
home visiting models have been tested,
using social workers or other professionals, rather than nurses, but none has achieved the same success or consistency as the Olds
program with nurses.36 The Olds model, now called the Nurse Family Partnership, has been successfully evaluated in several sites and is now replicated in more than 200 counties and many countries.
