As has become a tradition here on the blog, I've compiled a list
of 40 ideas that I
hope will help you make the most
of this season
of reflection,
penitence, and preparation.
So we have to think in terms
of three groups
of «sinners»: Jews who could turn to their heavenly Father in
penitence and
hope; Gentile sinners for whom
hope was dubious, most Jews regarding them as beyond the pale
of God's mercy; and Jews who had made themselves as Gentiles, for whom
penitence was, if not impossible, certainly almost insurmountably difficult.
We undertake this engagement in search
of unity, in
penitence for our wounding the body
of Christ, and in obedience to the call
of the Spirit, fervently
hoping that our witness will be made more efficacious and that before the eschaton, we shall come to the day when we can sit together at the table spread by our common Lord, Jesus Christ.
However it might be explained, God was known there as holy love, moving to
penitence and offering both pardon and a new righteousness, and becoming himself, as thus known, the ground
of faith in the ultimate meaning
of life and
of hope of its fulfillment.
