They are uncovering evidence that mothers, breast milk, and
hospital surfaces all contribute to the microbiome populations of infants.
For both experiments, the researchers used much higher concentrations of microbes than those typically found
on hospital surfaces, Koranteng said.
The list of potential applications includes pre-surgery skin washes, disinfection
of hospital surfaces and instruments, wound care, treatment of ulcers, and decontamination of medical devices.
«
Contaminated hospital surfaces play a key role in spreading those infections,» said Ethel Koranteng, a chemist at University College London, on April 5 at the Materials Research Society spring meeting.
«E. faecium is in the gut of nearly every human; it is extremely tough and survives a lot of stresses, often including efforts to
disinfect hospital surfaces.
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Direct microbial sequencing of environmental samples, such as from ocean water,
hospital surfaces, and the human gut, have illuminated the vast number of microbes present in our world.
These include frequent hand washing and cleaning of
all hospital surfaces with antimicrobial agents.
While this is easier to treat than some other types of hospital infections, like MRSA, it's tough to clean away on
hospital surfaces.
