Before Jane came over, I foraged some hydrangeas,
hosta leaves and other greenery from my backyard to make a natural and fresh bouquet.
We've set up a white card and our trusty photography assistant Spawn out in the garden on a weathered bench, framed against a backdrop of green
hosta leaves and an old fence — with the goal of this arrangement to show the white as a true reference point and the rest of the photo to show how a shifting white balance can really affect the overall color balance of your photos.

hostas, and hyacinths, this Mexican native is transformed into tequila by chopping away the tough, spiny
leaves and slowly roasting the heart.
But a giant carpet of
hostas — especially those with solid green
leaves — can be boring.
The plantsman also favours intensely pink dahlias and stands of spiky magenta lythrum, set off against the green
leaves of
hostas and iris.
If you must clean up, remove the
leaves of
hostas, daylilies and Siberian irises — these tend to turn into a soggy, scraggly mess by spring.

The downside to growing
hostas is that slugs and snails love them, and unless they are dealt with firmly, these pests can reduce a fine crown of
leaves to a garden doily overnight.
Some varieties of
hostas have contrasting stripes, as well as long narrow
leaves.
Hostas can be the gardener's best friend, with their shimmering multi-hued
leaves, ranging from white through yellow to green and and onto the bluest of blues.

Hostas, explains why the variety is his favourite: «The «Halcyon» - type
leaf is very definitely blue, but in shady conditions it appears to be splashed with gold; and seen in the light, the foliage is brighter and more green.
Grown and loved for their glorious foliage,
hostas can be petite (H. «Tiny Tears» is one of the smallest, its
leaves about the size of a dessert spoon) or enormous (H. «Empress Wu» is apparently the largest, with
leaves measuring 45 cm wide and likely to grow more than a metre high).

Contrary to popular belief,
hostas do not just produce
leaves, all
hosta varieties produce flowers, and some are beautifully fragrant.
Large cedar trees, ferns and
hostas create a peaceful pathway reminiscent of a well - groomed forest, still
leaving room for a spacious dining terrace, sitting area, and water feature.
