In corners, the French
hot hatch feels in its element, and the 4Control system makes it swallow corners way more efficiently than before.
The RS package gives it more of
a hot hatch feel with 18 - inch wheels and a spoiler.
Not exact matches
The engineers on the next Type R have a solid base on which to work, but work they must; even with 180bhp, this does not
feel like 90 per cent of a
hot hatch.
In these days of RS500 Foci, the 35 doesn't
feel like a fireball, but where the standard car
felt just a little lacklustre for a modern
hot hatch, the 35
feels more on the current pace.
There is a strong argument to say a
hot hatch with this level of performance should
feel otherworldly, but it's difficult to take issue with the car's breadth of ability.
The dreary engine and «box, combined with totally numb steering, mean that despite the enthusiastic chassis, the Trophy
feels like a normal Clio with in a sporty trim rather than a dedicated
hot hatch.
When we took our 2014 Ford Fiesta ST in for its first scheduled service, this
hot hatch was
feeling worse for the wear after a few months of hard driving.
As you no doubt know, the Mini Cooper continues to grow year after year, and out here on tight roads it
feels more compact crossover than
hot hatch.
Combined with a six - speed manual gearbox, the Civic Type R
felt capable to take on any European
hot hatch.
Our natural inclination is to tick the box marked «THP 210» to receive the top - end petrol engine in pursuit of quirky
hot hatch - like thrills, but performance
feels tepid.
And it seems strange to say this of the new Mini, but it
feels small, nimble and light compared with most modern
hot hatches.
Grip levels and outright pace are also very impressive, particularly in the Macan Turbo, which
feels quick enough to easily stay with a properly sorted
hot hatch.
Though acceleration is strong, the way power delivery peaks through the mid-range ensures the Polo GTI
feels like a standard
hatch with poke rather than an out - and - out
hot hatch.
The Cupra's not completely inert, and it has some decent pace, but it doesn't thrill or excite quite like a Fiesta ST.. However, without having driven them back - to - back it does
feel like a more engaging
hot hatch than the Polo GTI and it'll also offer stronger value for money.
But the lightness of the controls is what reveals the Mazda's humble roots, and although it never
feels like a bargain hire car, it's no thoroughbred
hot hatch.
It's a big car - every time I climbed out and looked at it, particularly in profile, it seemed more like a sports saloon than a «
hot hatch» - and occasionally it
feels it, trading a smaller
hatch's hyperactive agility for a more grown - up effectiveness, but that shouldn't be read that the experience is in any way dull.
The overall look and
feel is of a higher quality than in the old Clio, and more than a match for the Mégane, which we know to be durable and resistant to the squeaks and rattles that can plague firmly sprung
hot hatches.
If your actions remain calm and measured it doesn't translate to oversteer, just enough rotation for the 308 to
feel suitably agile for a
hot hatch.
It might have a
hot hatch engine, but the 2 - litre saloon - cum -
hatch feels rather tame.
The interior and driving position
feel off the pace in today's
hot hatch market.
It's almost certain to have a good chassis, but whether the engine
feels appropriate for a
hot hatch remains to be seen.
With ESP turned off the Sport
Hatch remains a benign, friendly device - although the numb -
feeling steering can't muster the sort of feedback you'd expect to find in a
hot - ish
hatch.
At 1475 kg it is heavier than our current favourite full - size
hot hatch, the Megane 265 (1387 kg), and you can
feel that it isn't quite as lively and light on its toes as a result, but the flip side is that the Vauxhall is arguably a more habitable everyday car than the Renault.
The Clio GT has a more focussed chassis than the ST - Line and it
feels closer to the proper Renault Sport model than the Fiesta does to the ST.. However the GT takes the slow and frustrating paddleshift gearbox from the full fat
hot hatch, possibly the worst element of the Renault Sport model.
It's not hard to see why it fails to keep company with the established pack of
hot hatches though — the engine's lack of displacement takes a toll on the torque output and the effects are
felt, or rather not
felt.
But this is Australia's Best Driver's Car, where X-factor and twisty road
feel - good mean everything, and in taking the time honoured
hot -
hatch approach of shooting for all - round excellence, rather than delivering one knockout blow, the i30 N just misses out on greatness.
But those armchair critics miss the point of the Volkswagen Golf R. It's a solid -
feeling, rip - roaring
hot -
hatch, sure.
However we
feel that the 16 inch ten spokers that go the furthest towards transforming the Opel Corsa Color Edition from a sporty grocery getter into a truly
hot hatch.
There might not be huge amounts of power on tap but the C - HR didn't
feel sluggish - it's just no
hot -
hatch, or rather
hot - crossover.
The quick and sharp steering, minimal body roll and the overall weight balance (it doesn't
feel nose heavy like most SUVs) morph this massive 5 metre long, high - riding, 2.2 ton SUV into something that
feels like a
hot hatch.
The result is a car that doesn't
feel as stiff or sharp as a
hot hatch but it still lithe in cornering and
feels well connected to the road.
It's agile and engaging but on the bumpier Northern Irish roads it exaggerated the
feeling that the Alfa SUV was more rear - wheel drive sedan than tenacious
hot hatch.
The suspension never
feels as stiff as you'd expect, which means body roll is more pronounced than a traditional
hot -
hatch, but managing the weight transfer from side - to - side in the corners adds to the involvement.
With a lovely satisfying short - throw gearshift, and a + R button that uprates the already firmer dampers by 30 per cent, increases throttle response and weights up the steering, the Type R has the handling and
feel to take on the best of its front - wheel - drive
hot hatch rivals.
That's turbo for you, but the Civic comes alive from the mid-range, and the delivery
feels more peaky than some
hot hatch engines out there.
At 2,205 kg this is no
hot -
hatch, yet at times it sure
felt as composed as one in the corners as we carved up and down the beautiful Gilboa mountains.
It never
felt that far off the tremendous Hyundai I30 N on the occasion tested against the
hot hatch newcomer, and when going into battle with the Civic Type R, the Golf made me question whether the Honda's bonkers looks were worth living with for the extra grip and composure it brings to the table.
It's a quick tourer, rather than a
hot hatch, and this persona is
felt in equal amounts through the suspension.
So, it doesn't exactly
feel hot -
hatch - like and the diesel engine can sound a bit rough at higher rpms, but in terms of driveability, the throttle response and in fact the way the steering
feels at high speeds, we have no complaints.
Drawing from the wealth of talent within Renault Sport, its parent company's performance division responsible for some of the best
hot hatches of all time, the A110 straight of the box
feels the finished article.
That it
feels slightly less focused and not as sharp as the A 45 will come as no surprise — it's 40 mm higher and 30 kg heavier than the
hot hatch — but its tendency to move about if you lift off the power mid corner gives it some much needed character.
The figure - hugging seats, sizeable fascia and centre console provide a snug
feeling, which is in keeping with what you'd expect from a
hot hatch.
In the turns, I could
feel the GLA45 AMG rotate like a
hot hatch, letting me enjoy this tossable little car.
In Normal and Sport modes the car just goes beautifully neutral as you unwind the heavy steering and squeeze the accelerator, already
feeling more directionally poised than the four - wheel - drive
hot hatch norm and without allowing the rear axle to run riot, or imposing on you for a significant steering correction.
Accelerate hard and you're struck by both the racket and the lack of momentum; it
feels like a
hot -
hatch engine stuck in a car two sizes too big.
The steering is thick and good to hold and
feels like a straight lift from the Abarth 595 which is one of our favourite
hot hatches.
But just as it started
feeling like the
hot hatch would be one of our unicorns, Honda flipped the script an announced that the 10th - generation Civic hatchback will in fact head across the Atlantic.
The car handles fine all roads, with good manners and sufficient feedback from the suspension and steering, but it just doesn't
feel like a
hot hatch.
