Eating or drinking foods that contain protein AND carbohydrates within a half
hour after vigorous exercise can store energy back into depleted muscles, say researchers.
In healthy human subjects, a 24
hour fast decreases liver glycogen stores no more than 57 % and in absence of
vigorous exercise does not lead to muscle glycogen consumption, suggesting that liver glycogen stores are sufficient
after a 24
hour fast to keep blood glucose levels within normal range (73).
