ranking is influenced by the number of times that site users select «yes» when asked «Was this review helpful to you?»
Now as Amazon
ranking work on total earnings (no one knows fully
how they work, bar someone at Amazon, and God, and neither are telling me — but dollar sales value is part of it) we can work out that some of those female
authors did outsell the male competitors
ranked above them.
Author ranking gives us clues
how we should categorize our books on Amazon for greater discoverability and tells us what our major is.

author» or «writer» is so bandied about these days, that you only need ask 1 question to assess
how well they're really doing: WHAT»S YOUR AMAZON
RANK?
If they're with a traditional small or mid-sized press, they may have an ebook, but they don't know
how to get online reviews or set up an Amazon
author page, so their book
ranks at about # 7,891,000.
And I don't think it denigrates
authors for us to
rank publishers by
how high they've set the bar.
To your question, for
authors, I think the blog is most important, but one has to know
how to make it effective (target audience, visual, etc), Twitter, Facebook, Google + (although
ranking this one is tough, especially if you are focused on page
rank — if so, you NEED to be active here), and then website (but again, if you are properly focused for page
rank, a website can be invaluable).
I don't think the boxset
authors or organizers are doing anything wrong, and I do think the idea of boxsets and working together is powerful; but I can also understand
how things like gifting books to inflate
rank seems like «buying your way» onto the bestseller lists (which is something many traditionally published books have done with a huge advertising budget).

I see problems with: * you have to be an active promoter of yourself to get articles read * the review process (mainly there is no ability to assess why rejected articles are rejected and the time wasting because of pedantic comments) * project - based funding and treating research like consulting (if I can tell you
how much a project will cost, then by definition it is not research) * since academia seems to be drifting towards consulting, researchers start to become underpaid compared to peers in consulting * the focus on the number of publications weighted by the
rank of the journal * status is based on if you publish in a high -
rank journal, «selected» to be a lead
author, and so on, and not whether you do good and creative research, good collaborator, good colleague to peers, etc..
Google
author rank, authorship, and cloud are just two examples, but there are many of
how these different sites are going to weed out the fakers from the real people.
