Downloading and converting my Kindle ebooks to read on the Kobo is very easy once you know
how, and requires using Cailbre, an
ereader software swiss - army knife, and a few plugins that remove the DRM and do the conversion.
The EPUB format is an open source standard that defines
how the content and metadata of an eBook should be packaged and
how eReading devices and
software should render the format to the reader.
You're also not likely to choose an
eReader based purely on the price of books in its proprietary store; other considerations, including (but not limited to) quality and price of hardware and
software, connectivity options, and
how easy it is to transfer books between devices, will also come into play.

Then, if I hear enough about
how Kobo
eReaders no longer have so many stuuuuuupid
software problems, I * might * buy another one.
This step is crucial so that the
eReading software can understand
how the book should be displayed to the reader.
Unfortunately, it is unclear
how the various platforms utilize the metadata that is embedded in the eBooks and the majority of vendors and
eReading software are not at all forthcoming with
how the metadata is accessed.
How idiotic is it to make the typography a function of the ebook file and not the
ereader software?
Granted there is still backlighting so it isn't exactly the same as an
ereader, but if you're looking to get a demo of
how the fonts look, try and ebook, formatting, etc it's well worth downloading the freebies to check out the
software.
It explains

software you may already own and which might already contain your formatted books — to generate the files necessary that make up the EPUB, as well as
how to manually create or improve the files in order to take advantage of the capabilities of the most advanced
ereaders, without leaving underperforming
ereaders too far behind.
