Understanding the brain's facial code could help scientists study
how face cells incorporate other identifying information, such as sex, age, race, emotional cues and names, says Adrian Nestor, a neuroscientist at the University of Toronto, who studies face patches in human subjects and did not participate in the research.

facing parents today is
how — and
how much — to reduce the amount of time their children spend on electronic devices such as
cell phones, tablets, video games, TV, and computers.
Over the summer, all I could think about when I wasn't looking at my sweet baby boy's
face was
how fat I felt and that thought was taking up more of my brain
cells than was healthy or necessary.
The field of live -

Faced with the complexity of the brain, neuroscience focused on questions that could be subdivided into manageable units:

faces and spotted coats (SN: 8/23/14, p. 7).
Hoping to clarify
how BMPs guide neural crest
cells to form the

Whatever the source of pluripotent
cells, Thomson says, researchers
face the same scientific challenges — namely, understanding
how to convert them into key tissues such as the beta islet
cells that are impaired in diabetics, and then
how to introduce them safely and effectively into humans.
This allowed the researchers to blow random puffs of air at their

It may also explain why primates are so good at facial recognition and
how we can potentially distinguish among billions of different people without needing an equally massive number of

Although the amygdala's importance in
face recognition and emotional assessment is well - known, little is understood about
how these processes work, but research led by investigators at Cedars - Sinai and the California Institute of Technology has found that at least some of the brain
cells that specialize in recognizing emotions may represent judgments based on the viewer's preconceptions rather than the true emotion being expressed.
The researchers then investigated
how neurons reacted to different aspects of emotions, and
how the activity of the
face cells related to the decision made by the subjects.

cells.
