This model demonstrates
how ocean surface currents function in transporting drifting objects on the ocean surface.

In addition to temperature, wind, and solar radiation data, the Pacific saildrones are measuring
how the
ocean and air exchange gases like carbon dioxide and oxygen, and they are using Doppler instruments to gauge
currents coursing up to 100 meters below the
surface.
The researchers use computer models to forecast future
ocean conditions such as
surface temperatures, salinity, and
currents, and project
how the distribution of different fish species could respond to climate change.
It represents in a simple way
how ocean currents carry warm
surface waters from the equator toward the poles and moderate global climate.»
So
how our environmental future plays out now is that as the poles melt, the
ocean heats, and water
surface area increases, atmospheric H2O skyrockets and some time later as the temperature passes through 4 deg C heading for 5 deg C global temperature rise, the
ocean currents start to stall.
Sorry Mike, but as I pointed out above, you're ignoring the fast - equilibrium of Henry's law, which sets a fixed partitioning ratio of 1:50 for
how much CO2 resides in the atmosphere and
oceans respectively at the
current mean
surface temperature of 15C.
Physically, it is difficult to see
how ocean temperatures can cause a consistent pattern of winds high up into the atmosphere while we have a very good physical explanation of
how the winds can drive the
surface ocean currents and temperature.
It is difficult to see
how such a mechanism can function without also raising
surface temperatures; but an oscillation in
ocean currents might produce such a result.
If the previous models are unskilled at predicting the
current hiatus in
surface warming and this is really because the warming has gone into the
oceans then exactly
how long will this take to come back and bite us in the bum?
The researchers also used the data from the Wave Glider to calculate
how much energy was transferred from the
surface wind to the
ocean currents.
Possibly some physical mechanism in the
ocean changed - changes in rate of upper and lower
ocean turnover, changes in locations of the turnover, changes in
ocean currents, changes in the atmosphere affecting
how much and where radiation reaches the
surface or changing the heat transfer to the
ocean, etc..
