I just did a wheel
bearing /
hub replacement
on the front passenger wheel because the old one was shot but now I have a new problem.
Third gear being
on one end of the mainshaft makes it susceptable to any increase in end float (wear) and allows the third / fourth
hub to drop third if wear in box /
bearings allows excessive end float.
You need to check your
hub bearings by rocking the wheels in the vertical plane with the vehicle raised and securely sitting
on stands.
I put it
on the lift and found that the rear
hub and
bearings were shot, to the point that the only thing holding the wheel
on were the caliper mounts along with a lot of front suspension issues.
You MUST always change the pads
on both sides of the car at the same time, otherwise you could end up with a dangerous mismatch between them - which might not be obvious in normal driving, until you have to do an emergency stop... Bad
bearings should show up when you span the
hub before refitting the new pads (hence why I asked that originally).
If storing a tire for an extended period of time using a water based tire protectant and storing it away from heat and light in a neutral position (not
bearing weight, inflated if
on a
hub) will provide the greatest life.
You may have damaged the wheel
hub or wheel
bearing, which could allow the rotor to rub
on the pads.
The problem is you have not seated the
bearing correctly onto the
hub or the
hub and axle got damaged when the
bearings spun
on them.
While this is not absolutely necessary, over the years I have seen wheel
bearings require replacement soon after being stressed by pressing the rotors
on and off the
hub.
Every wheel
on your car is attached to a
hub and inside this
hub is a set of lubricated wheel
bearings that allows your tires and wheels to spin freely without building up too much heat.
If wheel
bearings are installed without using a calibrated torque wrench to apply the
hub axle nut to the exact required torque specification, the
bearings are more or less instantly destroyed once you start driving
on them.
