Even keeping global warming to below 2 degrees Celsius — the target for international climate treaty talks — will force many species to the brink of extinction, threatening food supplies, human health, economies and communities.

My own prediction is that climate change will be deemed intolerable for humans long before it speeds up extinction rates, and even if radical steps have to be taken to head it off, they will be taken.

Even without putting climate change into the mix, recent extinction has proceeded at least 3 - 80 times above long - term background rates (Barnosky et al., 2011) and possibly much more (Pimm and Brooks, 1997; Pimm et al., 1995; WRI, 2005), 17 primarily from human - caused habitat destruction and overexploitation of species.

It could produce an extinction of species on a wide scale, an extinction that could even include the human race.

Grave concerns about human health, and even human extinction, have been put forward in the global warming debate.

I also work on reducing global catastrophic risk, which is anything that could end human civilization or even cause human extinction.
