In a Review published June 14 in Trends in Cognitive Sciences, researchers from Google DeepMind and Stanford University update a theory originally developed to explain how
humans and other animals learn — and highlight its potential importance as a framework to guide the development of agents with artificial intelligence.

For example, we should stop «hunting for sport or furs; farming minks, foxes
and other animals for their fur; capturing wild
animals (often after shooting their mothers)
and imprisoning them in small cages for
humans to stare at; tormenting

learn tricks for circuses,

animals can be measured by the speed of
learning and the complexity of what is

In a work recently completed, but not yet published, I have explained how the adaptability of
animal bodily systems, especially the brain, which Meredith
and Stein have remarkably demonstrated in respect of the senses in their The Merging of the Senses
and which is seen in infant language -
learning in a way discussed by Meltzoff, Butterworth
and others, reaches a peak in the case of the
human use of language so that it is solely semantic
and communicational constraints which determine grammar
and nothing universal in grammar is determined by neurology.

animals with a complex brain,

and other learned behavior.

animals learn something interesting, no doubt,» he says, «
and can use it flexibly to generate new behavior, a feat that until a couple of decades ago was thought to be restricted to
humans and other apes.»
In
humans and other animals,
learning occurs in two ways, Graybiel explains.
(1) However, while previous research on
humans and other animals has shown that certain types of
learning, like conditioning, can occur during sleep, (2) this study reveals that we can also memorize new representations
and objects (here auditory «objects») while dozing.
Such observations give biologists richer insights into
animal behavior,
others say,
and might help researchers
learn more about the roots of
human culture by clarifying what makes it distinctive.
«Recent theories have suggested that
humans» fluency in relational
learning — our ability to make comparisons between objects, events or ideas — may be the key difference in mental ability between us
and other animals,» said Dedre Gentner, professor of psychology in the Weinberg College of Arts
and Sciences at Northwestern
and a senior author of the study.
Dr Clint Perry, another lead author of the study, added: «Despite the obvious differences between
humans and other animals, understanding social
learning and culture in
animals holds a key to understanding the evolutionary roots of the peculiarities of social
learning and culture in
humans.»

learned how chemical reactions in
humans and other animals result in matter
and energy changes.
Humans can easily
learn foreign words that refer to a specific object,
and it was assumed that chimps
and other animals could not, perhaps owing to their different brain structure.
Many genes are shared between
humans and other animals, but as we
learn more about how
animals are built it is not that surprising.
