Underneath the skin, the innovation
continues as the BMW i8 uses a
hybrid propulsion system and exotic materials to make a true 21st century
sports car.
But the boxer configuration isn't the most emission friendly, and with Subaru already confirming an electric
car for 2021 and its next Forester SUV expected to be offered with a
hybrid powertrain, the Japanese firm may be forced to turn to
hybrid technology if it's to
continue to offer the outright performance expected of its
sports saloon.
Since the Cayenne and Panamera account for a major chunk of Porsche's global sales, the plug - in
hybrid versions will allow the automaker to meet stricter emissions standards while
continuing to offer traditional standalone gasoline powertrains in its
sports cars (for now, at least).
