Probabilistic approaches are rare,
with the exception being the effects of uncertainty in alternative representations of land - use
change for
hydrological variables (Eckhardt et al., 2003).
The question that is not addressed in any of this is whether it is wise to
change the composition of the atmosphere
with utterly uncertain outcomes in chaotic ecological,
hydrological and climatic Earth systems.
Coincident
with the abrupt cooling and
hydrological changes of ~ 5,200 yr BP, archaeological studies support a general pattern of abandoned Neolithic human settlements in several areas, including the Andes and the entire Eastern Mediterranean, indicating a widespread climatic crisis that marks the transition from the Chalcolithic to the early Bronze Age (Weninger et al., 2009).
Although these
hydrological changes could potentially increase soil water availability in previously snow - covered regions during the cool low - ET season (34), this effect would likely be outweighed by the influence of warming temperatures (and decreased runoff) during the warm high - ET season (36, 38), as well as by the increasing occurrence of consecutive years
with low precipitation and high temperature (Fig. 4A).

changes in the air alone
changing the Earth's equilibrium temperature.
The intensification of the
hydrological cycle,
with increased freshwater discharge, may also lead to decreased pH, although this effect may be partially compensated by increased alkalinity export, depending on land use
changes.
Stephen writes: «In the case of the Earth's atmosphere a
change in solar input is met
with a
change in evaporation rates and thus the speed of the whole
hydrological cycle keeping the overall temperature stable despite a
change in solar power input.»
Human activities are exerting pressure on the environment
with consequences such as global climate
change, disruption of the
hydrological cycle and impacts on water catchments.
When done so, proxy records and climate models indicate that the response to past global warming was profound,
with evidence for global reorganisation of the
hydrological cycle and profound local increases and decreases in rainfall; combined
with elevated temperatures and terrestrial vegetation
change, this appears to often result in warming - enhanced soil organic matter oxidation, chemical weathering and nutrient cycling.
