The
material is also highly
hydrophobic, meaning it repels liquids.
Engineers are now mimicking the beetle's back and reproducing similar
hydrophobic - hydrophilic surfaces,
materials and products at the nanoscale.
To copy the beetle's water - collecting design,
materials scientist Michael Rubner, chemical engineer Robert Cohen, and colleagues at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge created a rough coating so water repelling — or
hydrophobic — that water sprayed onto it stood up in nearly spherical droplets.
The new oleic acid coating is inherently
hydrophobic, repelling water and any pollutants, and it allows the
material to react to temperature fluctuations naturally.
Conducted by Zainab Ngaini and colleagues at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak, the study found that when sago waste (consisting primarily of cellulose and lignin) is chemically modified using fatty acid derivatives, the resulting
material is more
hydrophobic than untreated sago waste, implying that it has less affinity for water and an excellent affinity for oil.
In the prototype, the researchers coat the board with a much denser array of tiny spheres, only a micrometer high, made from a
hydrophobic (water - repellent)
material.
The researchers demonstrated the versatility of their approach by using two polymers with radically different
material properties — one
hydrophobic and one hydrophilic — to make their particles.
For example, the
material itself is
hydrophobic, making it more difficult to pass strands of DNA through them.
Mica, used in the drilling industry, was the most hydrophilic of the
materials, while graphite was the most
hydrophobic.
Once the
material is oxidizes by oxygen, water absorbs stronger, transforming the
material from
hydrophobic to hydrophilic,» explains Ruoff.
The viscosity differences created by container
materials are directly affected by the degree to which the
materials are either hydrophilic — which means they attract water — or
hydrophobic — which means they repel it.
